Whilst the Liberal Democrats and Conservatives participate in political point-scoring, our Mayor has failed to grasp the detrimental effects the Council’s development plans will have on the people of North Watford and the further implications it will have on the town as a whole.
Parking is a nightmare already for residents, with just 203 parking spaces for 1,214 homes that will largely be flats, and more convoluted parking ‘solutions’. Traffic, which is at a standstill during the normal morning commute, will be even more problematic across the town as people try to find alternate routes.
Then there are the flats themselves. These will fail to help local residents like myself who are part of ‘generation rent’, due to the low percentage of affordable housing in Watford. Many agreed new builds being developed on St. Albans Road are for sale in the region of £320,000 to £360,000 for a two-bed flat thus furthering the rent cycle that so many families and young people in Watford are caught in.
As a local resident, I attended the vote in December where four Liberal Democrat councillors voted for the colossal Range development. Boos and cries of ‘shame on you’ rang out from the public gallery. The Lib Dems doth protest about our Tory Government, but they know they failed to represent local residents in Watford that day.
Watford residents need people to represent their local communities, not contribute further to the overdevelopment that both Dean Russell MP, Mayor Peter Taylor and fellow Lib Dem councillors say they are unhappy with.
