Following yesterday’s announcement of the closure of John Lewis in Watford, coming just a month after Debenhams closed its doors permanently, Councillor Nigel Bell issued this statement:
“It is a true shame that John Lewis have closed their doors for good in Watford. Starting at Trewins in Queens Road, John Lewis has been in the heart of Watford for 140 years, 30 of which in our shopping centre.
It is a truly terrible day for Watford to lose one of our historic shops and even more jobs in Watford as a result of this ongoing crisis and downward economy.“
The disaster of Debenhams closure after only 18 months and John Lewis pulling the plug after 140 years is a massive double blow for our town. With Intu going into administration, it is a hat-trick of bad new for our town.
It is not good enough for the Liberal Democrat Mayor to go around wringing his hands, residents need to see action. It is his job to save jobs – he must intervene decisively and try to make John Lewis reconsider.”
