Cllr Nigel Bell, Leader of Watford Labour Group said: “It is deeply disappointing to see that Watford’s MP, Dean Russell, has voted for the Government’s Internal Market bill.
The Government promised that they had an ‘oven-ready’ deal, the Prime Minister signed this deal himself and Dean Russell and the rest of his Tory colleagues won the election promising to deliver it.
Now they say it is inadequate and seek to renege on our agreement with the EU, breaking international law. Did they deliberately mislead voters during the election, or did Boris Johnson and the Tories not know what they were signing?
It is no surprise that five former prime ministers, among many others, have publicly criticised this bill. The damage that this bill, breaking international law, would do to our global reputation is severe and irreparable.
The UK is a country that upholds its agreements, carries out its responsibilities and rightly condemns other nations that break international law. The actions of the Prime Minister and the Government are disgraceful.“
