Following the announcement that the government voted against providing free school meals for children over the holidays, we at Watford Labour are supporting the Hertfordshire Against Holiday Hunger petition to make sure that children will not go hungry over the Christmas holidays.  We are calling on Hertfordshire County Council to make sure we do not repeat the government’s choice this Christmas.

We the undersigned petition the County Council to Provide enough meals to ensure that the 19,820 children who receive free school meals in Hertfordshire do not go hungry over the school holidays.

Across the Country:

– 14% of parents & 10% of children have experienced food insecurity over the last 6 months.

– 32% of families have lost income as a result of Covid-19.

– Demand for food banks this winter is predicted to be 61% higher than last.

– In the East of England 126,925 are eligible for free schools meals and in Hertfordshire alone there are 19,820 children eligible.

No child, whatever their situation should be forced to go hungry over any school holiday. let alone during a global pandemic After the UK Government voted to not extend free school meal provision over the holidays, we have seen so many amazing Hertfordshire organisations and local businesses step up to help at this difficult time, but we need our local politicians to step up too.

Other Councils have shown that this is possible, including our neighbours Essex County Council who are providing free school meals. We need Hertfordshire County Council to follow their lead and take action by providing free school meals to vulnerable children across our county.

If you want to support Hertfordshire’s children this Christmas, add your name to the petition here.
