The Labour Party today brought an Opposition Day motion opposing cuts to Universal Credit.
Despite the hardship so many are already facing, the Conservatives failed to support this motion after their MPs decided not to vote.
Six million families now stand to lose out because of the Government’s decision.
Leader of Watford Labour Group and Holywell Cllr Nigel Bell said: “It is deeply shameful that the Government is planning to cut the lifeline that so many rely on.
The UK has had the worst recession of any major economy on the Conservatives’ watch – now they are forcing families to pay the price.
Across Watford, 11,245 people stand to lose out. Protecting families should be at the forefront of the Government’s response, but today they have been abandoned. Just down the road in South Oxhey there are many desperate families too trying to make ends meet. A £20 cut in help during this pandemic would be an especially cruel and heartless one.
Dean Russell MP should explain to residents why they think it’s right to make the poorest households shoulder the heaviest burden or apologise for failing to oppose this cut.”
